The week in numbers: world crises, 17 October 2026

This overview uses only figures read on Paravigil's public pages on 17 October 2026: the overview and the analysis page. Nothing here comes from elsewhere. All figures are as of that date and may change.

What a level is

According to the methodology page, a country's level is a band set by the total points it receives from several public signals (violence, natural hazards, outbreaks, internet outages, travel advice and others). The bands run from Normal (0-1 points) through Watch, Elevated and High to Severe (8 or more). A level is a summary of recorded signals. It is not a safety rating for any individual, and Paravigil states that its content is information only, not for emergency or operational decisions.

How old the conflict data is

Conflict figures come from the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP), which Paravigil describes as running about 4-6 weeks behind. The conflict numbers below therefore describe the period up to 31 August 2026, not the last few days. Where UCDP has not yet published, Paravigil shows a model estimate, labelled as such and given as a range.

The numbers

  • Levels: 33 countries are at Elevated level or worse: 10 Elevated, 10 High and 13 Severe. A further 37 are at Watch.
  • Organised violence: 10,854 deaths in the 30 days to 31 August 2026, 12% more than the 9,680 in the 30 days before (UCDP data).
  • Ninety-day picture: 30,802 deaths in 61 countries; Ukraine accounts for 51% of them. These are country-level totals only.
  • Model estimate, not UCDP data: about 8,238 deaths for September 2026 (range 5,657-10,819). UCDP's published figure for August 2026 is 11,118.
  • Natural hazards: 154 events in the last 7 days, down 48% from 299 the week before. The hazard feed is built on GDACS, the UN and European Commission disaster alert system, together with USGS and NASA data.
  • Weather: 19 countries are under severe-weather warnings, 8 of them with extreme warnings.
  • Satellite mapping: 2 activations in the last 30 days, against 8 in the period before.
  • Infrastructure: 46 power plants lie near violence, 3 of them nuclear.
  • Internet outages: Brazil shows 46 outage alerts in 24 hours, against a 30-day average of 5.1.

What these numbers do not say

Counts of events and deaths reflect what has been recorded and published, with delays. A fall in hazard events over one week is not by itself a sign that conditions are safer, and a rise in recorded deaths is not a forecast. Some comparisons on the overview page, such as how many countries were at Elevated level or above a period earlier, could not be interpreted reliably, so they are left out. The page also lists "movers" and a per-million table without values in its text, so these are not reported here.
