Evacuation: safe movement to the exit

Evacuation is the organized movement of people out of a danger zone, and it has strict rules. Move to the nearest safe exit along known routes marked with green "Exit" signs. In any public building it is worth noting the exits in advance — like on a plane before takeoff. Do not go back into a burning space for belongings, documents or pets — that is one of the most common causes of death.

Using lifts during a fire is strictly forbidden: a lift may get stuck if the power fails, and the shaft acts as a chimney. Go down the stairs only. In smoke-filled areas keep low: hot smoke and toxic gases rise, while near the floor the air is cleaner — move crouched or on all fours.

Pay special attention to doors. Before opening a closed door, place the back of your hand on it (or check the handle): if the door or handle is hot, fire is behind it — do not open it, find another way. Open any door carefully, standing to the side and holding it — a sudden inrush of oxygen can cause a burst of flame. Close doors behind you: a closed door greatly slows the spread of fire and smoke. After getting out, move to a safe distance, gather at the agreed assembly point and tell the firefighters whether everyone is out.
